The wonderful thing about painting is you can make it all up. The colors, the subject, anything. The only limit is truly imagination. With most of my pet portrait commissions I try to stay as true to the inspiration photo as possible, and I think that is what most people expect from me. There have been several instances that I have added a completely different background. When you commission a painting from I am not just creating a likeness for you, but I unique piece of fine art. I would like to showcase for you some of those pieces for you in this blog.

In this portrait, we went with a lovely grassy out door scene in place of the kitchen cabinets. Also the photo has a filter so we went back to the dogs truer colors:

I don't expect everyone to have an artistic eye or be fully inspired and full of ideas and know exactly what they want, what colors, etc. Most of my customers expect me to be the artist, to pick the best photo, pose, composition and background. That is totally fine. I am happy to come up with ideas, but I am happy to hear your ideas too. I tend to gravitate to outdoor scenes and flowers when it is up to me pick a background. This is mostly true for canvases 12 X 16 and up.

In this memorial portrait we decided to go with a surreal fall background.

When most people take photos of their pet they are focused on capturing them. Of course your background is not always going to look awesome. The beautiful part of art is we can create a beauty. My 24 x 30 Tulip Pug painting ( Currently on display at Critter Cabana in Newberg, Or.) I painted really to paint a Patch of Tulips. I love flowers and think they can add a lot of beauty and personality to a pet portrait. This black pug is celebrated with a ring of spring tulips:

The original photo here was taking on living room carpet, but I decided to do a whimsical wildflower setting to showcase this shaggy dog:

Last but not least the original photo of this sweet senior Jack Russel she sat patiently in the backseat of a car. For this painting we decided to do an English Garden inspired background. Her owner was delighted with the results:

Message me to commission a fine art painting of your pet. We can create whatever your heart desires. Such is the beauty and magic of art. I hope that you have enjoyed this little tour of altered backgrounds. I apologize if your pet's portrait did not make this list and I did a special background for you. I just grabbed the first few that came to mind.
